On Sunday, January 7, there was a large water valve failure at PSNS. This has resulted in increased demand in Bremerton’s water system at triple our normal flows for this time of year. Sources are able to meet this demand and operators are keeping reservoir levels up. We received a few customer calls on discolored water. Bremerton investigated multiple locations in the system and all were clear with good chlorine residual.Any discoloration is due to the increased flows stirring up the naturally-occurring sediments in the water distribution system that can cause the water to be brownish. These effects are expected to be limited to the west side of town and may be more pronounced in neighborhoods closest to the shipyard. Although the water is receiving disinfection treatment, affected customers will want to follow flushing instructions until the system settles down after the Shipyard has completed their repairs, expected to be within the next day or two.For more information, Bremerton water customers can call the Water Quality Hotline at 360-473-5490 for recorded flushing instructions, Customer Response Line at 360-473-5920, or visit the Discolored Water webpage.
