The original Well 9 was drilled in 1977 but was shut down in 2010 due to concerns with excessive sand production in the well. The City still maintains water rights to this location and will be drilling a new well next to the existing well to provide additional water sources for the City’s water system. The wells in this area supply much of the water to East Bremerton.
In 2023, the City developed the site to prepare for mud rotary drilling of the new well, which is the current project. A follow-on project in 2026 will complete the site to prepare for well operation, including a control building and chlorine injection system.
The contract for the well drilling was awarded to Schneider Water Services in February 2025 for $1,570,132.20. Drilling began in April with anticipated completion in Winter 2026. TerraPhase is providing hydrogeological support during the well drilling.
Project Status (January 2026)
Drilling was completed in September and well development was completed in January 2026. Phase 1 of well testing will begin in January. Phase 2 will occur after expanded water rights application approval, at which time the well will be tested at higher flow rates. This application process will likely extend the higher rate phase 2 well testing into Spring 2026. Source approval is anticipated in 2026.
