Treatment to Begin Early Next Week, Public Boat Launch Closed During Application 

The City of Bremerton will begin new algae control measures in Kitsap Lake on Monday, June 14 through Tuesday, June 15. This treatment is part of a continuing effort to help control algae growth, reduce the potential of a toxic cyanobacteria bloom and restore water quality to the lake.

AquaTechnex has been hired by the City of Bremerton to apply Phoslock, a phosphorus sequestering agent, for the treatment. Phoslock reduces free reactive phosphorus and continues to sequester phosphorus released from lake sediment for the long term.

To make the application, the boat launch will be closed for public access from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday June 14 through Tuesday June 15.  Schedules may change due to shipping delays and the City of Bremerton will strive to keep the public informed if changes occur.   

The City of Bremerton asks that all boaters and jet ski enthusiasts with access to the lake avoid using it during the hours of application from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 15. Phoslock application is completed in systematic routes that slightly overlap each other so all areas of the water’s surface receive an adequate dose. Wakes or boats that cause the application boat to swerve or change course will have a negative impact on the application. 

This project has been developed in cooperation with Kitsap Lake property owners, Bremerton’s Mayor, Bremerton City Council, and Kitsap County. Application is permitted by an Aquatic Plant and Algae Management General Permit issued by the Department of Ecology.
